Public Health Degree Programs at Yale University

Public health degree programs are available from the Yale School of Public Health at Yale University. The first program awards graduates a Master of Public Health (MPH) when students complete two years of work. Students spend four semesters taking 20 units of classes and then do an internship in the summer. Majors need to pick from one of four concentrations: global health, public health modeling, regulatory affairs, and climate change and health. They will take four required classes, including Social Justice and Health Equity, Health Policy and Health Care Systems and Foundations of Epidemiology and Public Health. They also need to take classes from one of the concentrations.
An accelerated track is available for students who want to earn both an MPH and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). This program takes 22 months to finish and allows students to take classes that count towards both degrees. The university also offers a five-year program for students who want to earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Science (BS) as well as an MPH. It gives students the foundation that they will need in the MPH program and to work in the public health field.
In addition to the MPH, Yale University also offers a Master of Science (MS) in Public Health. This program has a concentration in biostatistics that takes two years to finish and a concentration in chronic disease epidemiology that takes only one year to finish. The university allows part-time students to spend up to five years in either track. It also offers a one-year concentration in infectious diseases and a two-year concentration in health informatics. Students can compare the courses and requirements of each concentration before they apply.
The Yale School of Public Health has a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health program that includes six concentrations too such as epidemiology of microbial diseases, biostatistics, chronic health epidemiology, and health policy and management. Ph.D. students will take advanced classes in one of these concentrations and do some type of dissertation. They have several years to do their dissertations, but they’ll need to meet with their advisors to ensure that they complete all requirements. Yale University Accreditation Details
Yale started its public health programs in 1915 and received accreditation for all those programs through the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). CEPH accreditation applies to the graduate and doctoral programs as well as the MPH track. It also has primary accreditation from the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). This is the regional accreditation that lets students use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if they think they need financial aid.
Yale University Application Requirements
The combined bachelor’s and MPH program offered by Yale requires that students apply at the beginning of their freshmen years. Students cannot start this program when they begin at the university. The Schools of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS) has a website that lets students apply. They will need to provide a form that shows all the courses they took at Yale as well as an SAT score and a personal statement that explains why the student wants to enroll in the combined program. Yale also asks for a resume and two letters of recommendation, with at least one letter coming from a university instructor. Students must have approval from the dean before beginning this program too.
Students applying to any MPH program must also apply through the SOPHAS website. They have until the middle of December to both apply to Yale and submit the FAFSA. Students need to submit transcripts from their former colleges, a GMAT, MCAT or GRE score and a resume or CV. Yale also requires a statement of purpose with an objectives statement and three letters of recommendation. Students applying to the MS or doctoral program can apply through the Yale University admissions website. They need a bachelor’s degree awarded within the last three years, college transcripts and a GRE score. Students who want to study epidemiology and related fields can provide an MCAT score instead of a GRE score.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Graduate students at Yale pay $47,840 each year for tuition and another $525 in fees. Yale offers health insurance for an extra $2,402 per year and requires coverage for students. Though the university does not charge fees during the summer term, it charges students $11,960 for their tuition. A semester payment plan is available for students who can make a $100 upfront fee as long as they agree to make equal payments in the following months. Both doctoral and graduate students pay the same rates and qualify for payment plans.
With the FAFSA. Yale can help students in need get financial aid. The university offers a Financial Fitness program that teaches students how to get the most help for school and how to pay off their loans later. This program is available online for free and includes a short quiz to help students get started. The FAFSA helps the university identify which students qualify for scholarships. It will send letters to students within 10 days of accepting them to show which scholarships they will get. They can also work for the university in positions that pay $12.75 an hour and take out student loans.
