At Orlando House, the School of Health & Human Services offers a 120-credit Public Health B.S. for Southern Connecticut State University Owls with minimum 2.75 GPAs to learn the basics of community disease prevention with courses like Food Hygiene and one 150-hour practicum. Since Fall 2019, the Healthcare Studies B.S. has developed a 120-credit, four-year curriculum where undergrads can intern at Yale New Haven Hospital, take the Liverpool Trip, conduct Human Performance Lab research, and join the Pre-Health Society. Chaired by Dr. Jean Breny, the Master of Public Health M.P.H. follows a 48-credit, CEPH-accredited sequence with a built-in Health Promotion Specialization for classes from Biostatistics to Epidemiology before the 14-week capstone internship. Online on Blackboard, the School Health Education M.S. also delivers a 30-credit, CAEP-approved thesis path to Connecticut’s PreK-12 endorsement.
About Southern Connecticut State University
Southern Connecticut State University originated on September 11, 1893, when Principal Arthur Boothby Morrill welcomed an inaugural coed class of 84 to New Haven State Normal School. In 1896, New Haven graduated its first educators with a three-year teaching certificate. That Fall, the Normal School relocated from the former Skinner School to its own Howe Street campus. In 1937, it became the New Haven State Teacher’s Colleges to award four-year degrees. In 1953, the current Crescent Street facilities were purchased. The next year, the Master of Education was launched as its earliest graduate program. In 1959, the Legislature renamed it the Southern Connecticut State College for broader liberal arts instruction. On October 31, 1970, the Hilton C. Buley Library was dedicated. In 1983, the Southern Connecticut State University name was adopted. By 2011, SCSU came under the control of the Connecticut Board of Regents for Higher Education.

Southern Connecticut State University Accreditation Details
On February 2, 2017, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE) accepted the Interim Fifth-Year Report from Southern Connecticut State University to continue Level VI accreditation through 2021 under President Joe Bertolino, EdD, who earned the ACPA Coeptis Award twice. Located 136 miles north via Interstate 84 in Burlington, Massachusetts, this superb six-state New England Region accreditor is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to review SCSU’s 62 baccalaureate, 59 master’s, and three doctoral majors. Further, the Department of Public Health was accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) on May 30, 1998. The Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) also approved Southern Connecticut State in October 2014.
Southern Connecticut State University Application Requirements
Enrollment at Southern Connecticut State University is classified as “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s since 5,479 of the 8,625 Fall 2018 applicants were chosen for 64 percent acceptance. First-year Owls seeking the Public Health B.S. or Healthcare Studies B.S. need sufficient secondary school prep. Finishing a high school diploma or GED certificate would qualify. The Class of 2022 reported an average GPA of 3.0. Mid-range admitted ACT scores were 18-21. The middle 50th percentile had New SAT scores of 980-1180. The Honors College requires a minimum 1050 SAT or 23 ACT score. Department of Public Health transfers must have cumulative GPAs above 2.0 in 12+ regionally accredited credits. International students must speak English proficiently with 6.0 IELTS, 72 TOEFL iBT, 900 SAT, or better scores. The School of Graduate & Professional Studies requires a four-year bachelor’s degree. The last 60 baccalaureate credits must have a 3.0 or greater GPA. Taking the GRE General Test is wholly optional. School Health Education M.S. cohorts must hold initial PreK-12 certification.
Southern Connecticut State University has an Early Action deadline of November 1st for freshmen. Rolling admission for Public Health B.S. and Healthcare Studies B.S. majors begins December 15th. Final deadlines are August 14th for Fall and January 10th for Spring starts. Non-U.S. residents must apply five months before semesters begin. The Master of Public Health closes on May 1st each year. School Health Education M.S. cohorts file until April 1st and November 1st. Accordingly, complete the SCSU or Common Application online for $50. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2020-21, Southern Connecticut State University will charge in-state Public Health B.S. majors $6,162 annually. Non-resident bachelor’s tuition will be $18,436 per year. Undergrads cover the $4,484 general fee, $140 student activity fee, $30 media fee, and $40 Writing Center fee. Living at the New Haven campus’ dorms like Hickerson Hall adds $7,222 for yearly housing. Standard meal plans for Connecticut Hall are $6,048 extra. SCSU budgets $1,400 for textbooks and $1,566 for miscellaneous. Annual undergrad attendance equals $27,682 in-state and $40,642 out-of-state. Note the New England Regional Student Program cuts prices by 50 percent. Graduate degrees bill Connecticuters $6,599 and non-residents $13,211 per full-time semester. Studying part-time incurs $840 per credit.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Office of Financial Aid in Wintergreen Building Room 117 connects 87 percent of new full-time SCSU Owls to tuition assistance averaging $6,117 each for $4.69 million combined. University funds include the Denis Marone Endowed Scholarship, Julia Kobus Endowed Scholarship, Danny Gonsalves Public Health Scholarship, Joann Powers Memorial Scholarship, Mildred Schepart Gosden Family Scholarship, Dr. Joan Finn Scholarship, Abie Grossfeld Scholarship, Alvin Wood Endowed Scholarship, Anthony & Virginia Avallone Scholarship, Daniel Ort Memorial Scholarship, and Finis Engleman Endowed Scholarship. Since 1998, the Anthony Pinciaro Memorial Scholarship has supported part-time Master of Public Health majors with 12+ graduate credits. The Jessie Elizabeth Sandler Scholarship assists the School of Health & Human Services majors with GPAs above 3.0. Federal resources, such as the Pell Grant and Health Professions Loan, require FAFSA applications coded 001406. Connecticuters can also use the Roberta B.
