San Francisco State University offers over 77 degrees and 48 concentrations at the bachelor’s level. The master’s program houses 63 degrees with 41 concentrations. Each of these can be found within one of the six colleges hosted by the university. Students can pursue health education degrees within the College of Health and Social Sciences. The goal of the health education department at San Francisco State University is to teach every student the importance of health and health equity as an individual and throughout the community.
Prospective undergraduate students can pursue a B.S. in Community Health Education. Students can also choose to obtain a minor in either health education or women’s health studies. Regardless of what each student chooses, some of the foundational courses include Public Health Biology which is a basic introduction to the biological aspects of public health that further explores the molecular makeup and relation of health problems regarding the population. Other courses include Educational Justice, Health Equity, and Academic Success, Global Health, Personal and Social Determinants of Health and Health Justice in Social Policy.
Graduate students pursuing an MPH (Master of Public Health) in Community Health Education will take foundational courses that will propel them into an advanced curriculum. An MPH in Community Health Education consists of 17 courses. Graduate students can expect to gain enlightenment through courses such as Biostatistics Laboratory, Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health, and Public Health Policy. Graduates will also explore their major with courses in Community Health Education Professional Formation, Public Health & Principles of Community Organizing and Theories of Social Behavioral Change in Community Health Education. The program will conclude with a Master of Public Health Culminating Experience Seminar.

SF is a participating member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association at the NCAA DII conference level.

San Francisco State University received institutional accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). San Francisco State University also holds accreditation credential in 28 individual programs including the Education, Health and Human Services & Behavioral & Social Sciences Programs which were accredited by the Unit Accreditation Board, National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Committee on Accreditation of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (COA/CTC). The Public Health program received accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health.
San Francisco State University Application Requirements
First-year undergraduate students should prepare official high school transcripts, an SAT or ACT score based on GPA, and a $70 non-refundable application fee. Undergraduate students who have a 3.0 GPA or higher will be considered for admissions with any SAT or ACT score. For those who have received anything less than a 3.0, SAT and ACT score requirements increase.
First-year graduate students should submit official transcripts that show proof of a bachelor’s degree, a minimum GPA of 3.0, and any other additional requirements that go along with the program of choice. Other documents include a CV or resume, a personal statement, letters of recommendation, a writing sample and essay, and a portfolio.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate students who live either on or off-campus and are residents of the state of California can expect tuition of $27,474 and those who are living with family members or parents can expect tuition of $17,742. This cost includes the price of books & supplies, food & housing, and other miscellaneous fees.
At SF, 68% of full-time students at the undergraduate level receive financial aid in the form of a scholarship or grant with an average award amount of $9,330.
Graduate students who are nonresidents of the state will be required to pay an additional fee of $396 per credit unit. Overall, graduate students can expect tuition of $2,696 per credit hour for less than six units. Students who are taking more than six units can expect base tuition of $4,094. Graduate students who are pursuing a second baccalaureate degree and are taking less than six units can expect base tuition of $2,846 and those taking more than six units can expect tuition of $4,354. Students seeking a doctoral degree in the education department can expect tuition of $6,683. Graduate students are eligible for various types of financial aid and assistance.
