About Saint Louis University

Saint Louis University began as Saint Louis Academy, opening the doors in 1818. Initially, only young men were permitted to attend and classes were held in rented rooms. The school was operated by Bishop Louis DuBourg who had recently arrived in the country. Eventually, the Jesuits of the Missouri Mission took control of the school, changing the name to Saint Louis College. A secondary school at the same location kept the Saint Louis Academy name.

The school became Saint Louis University in 1827 not long after the Society of Jesus took control. At this time, the school was located on Ninth and Washington Avenue. In 1867, Lindell’s Grove, the location of the Camp Jackson Affair during the Civil War, was purchased and the University relocated there in 1889.
