Degrees in public health at Harvard University are offered by the T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and there are five options available for students that are at the graduate and doctoral levels. Students interested in professional practice will choose the Master of Public Health, the Master in Health Care Management, or the Doctor of Public Health (Dr.PH).

Students who are interested in research instead of professional practice will choose the Master of Science in Public Health program or enroll in the Doctor of Philosophy option. To qualify for any of the programs, students must demonstrate excellent written and spoken English, as well as show proficiency in all required prerequisites.

For the Master of Public Health degree, students have several options like the 45-credit program that requires that students have previous professional experience and the 65-credit program that requires fewer years of experience and offers more instruction. Students can also earn their MPH with a concentration in epidemiology with that option being offered on campus or online.

The Master of Health Care Management is a degree program for executives who are mid-career physicians interested in improving their managerial skills. The Doctor of Public Health path also requires that students have professional experience. Students in the MPH program may also choose to enroll in the medical residency program known as the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency program or apply to the university’s Environmental Health Pediatric Fellowship.

For the university’s research degrees, the Master of Science program requires that students complete 80, 60, or 42.5 credits with the total depending on the style of the program the student pursues. Students may specialize in one of the five key areas of public health. Those areas of specialization include biostatistics, environmental health, global health & population, epidemiology, and computational biology & quantitative genetics.

The Ph.D. in Public Health also allows students to specialize in various areas, and each concentration requires that students meet certain prerequisites. For example, students in the Ph.D. in Biostatistics program must have a strong background in mathematics. Students pursuing the Ph.D. in Biological Sciences in Public Health must have significant experience in advanced biology and chemistry. There are also joint degrees available that combine an MPH with a law degree or a DDS.

Harvard University is institutionally accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and has maintained this accreditation since 1929. The NEASC is one of six regional accrediting agencies operating throughout the United States that is recognized by the federal government’s Department of Education. Some of the degrees, departments, and divisions within the university are also accredited by various commissions and associations.

The law program has earned specialized accreditation from the American Bar Association, and several of the university’s programs in dentistry and oral surgery have been accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. Further approvals come from the American Psychological Association, the Planning Accreditation Board, the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System, and The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Harvard University Application Requirements

First-year students applying to Harvard University will use the Common Application, Coalition Application, or University College Application. Application materials include the Harvard College Questionnaire, a $75 application fee, and standardized test scores. The university also recommends students take two SAT subject tests. Applicants will also send Advanced Placement scores, a high school transcript, and two teacher reports. Students may obtain a fee waiver for the application fee.

Students interested in attending Harvard University as graduate students must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. The university actively seeks students who are from groups that are historically underrepresented in graduate school. All graduate degree students enroll in full-time study in the fall term. Application materials include an online application form, application fee of $105, and transcripts, as well as letters of recommendation, test scores, and a statement of purpose.

Tuition and Financial Aid
