What can I do with an MPH MHA degree?

While MPH and MHA degrees both appear to be very similar, there are differences between each advanced degree. Because the Master of Public Health degree program and the Master of Health Administration may have some of the same core courses and various similar curriculum requirements, they are ideal degrees to complete through a dual degree program.

What is the Focus of a Master of Public Health?

An MPH program is a graduate program that will take about two years to complete if enrolled as a full-time student. The MPH curriculum focuses on health organizations, science and sociology due to the fact that Public Health professionals work in an interdisciplinary field that have a dual focus on disease in specific populations and health. Students who are enrolled in this program should be able to apply the research methods they have learned in their class to public health to take advantage of a wide range of career opportunities.

What is the Focus of a Master of Health Administration?

The Master of Health Administration does not specifically focus on public health. Instead, when studying for an MHA, the focus of the degree program will be on the delivery of healthcare services and not on society or diseases within a population. When taking an MHA program, the student will learn how to become the most effective leader in a healthcare setting. As they develop the management skills, they will also learn the core components of business like accounting, management and marketing. There is much less of an emphasis on the science of health and more of an emphasis of business in the healthcare arena.

How to Enter an MPH/MHA Program?

Students wishing to pursue a dual degree usually need to apply and be accepted by each Master’s program individually.  Typical entrance requirements include the completion of a Bachelor’s level degree and passing of an entrance exam.  Some programs may also require relevant work experience or previous coursework.  Make sure to review all of the requirements for each of the programs you are considering.
